About the Bicycle Action Committee

The Bicycle Action Committee (BAC) serves to promote a better bicycling culture in Cobourg. The Committee has  developed a Bicycle Action Plan (see presentation, below). The BAC promotes creating new bike lanes and routes, improving safety and convenience for bicyclists, bicycle tourism throughout the area, and the creation of cycling/walking trails.

We are also establishing a Bicycle Advisory Committee to report to Cobourg council.

Bixi Bags Big Bike Business in London and Boston

Bixi Bike

Montreal's 'Bixi' is doing big business and making quite a splash in the bike-share world. Recently Both Boston and London England have signed with Bixi to use their bikes and share system to implement city-wide bike sharing.

Two Cobourg bike commuters

Everyday Cobourg residents Minnie de Jong and Jim Breckenridge bike to the train station and catch the train to work, come rain or shine. “It is an easy  way to get around,  and it’s fast for shorter distances”, says Minnie.

For Jim, snow is no obstacle. “I have a winter and summer bike. If I wasn’t riding, I would be cross country skiing”, says Jim.

Easy-to-use bicycle service proposed for Toronto

Toronto is considering the purchase a fleet of 3,000 bicycles to provide a pay-as-you-go public bicycle service to start next spring. Users can pick up a bicycle at one of many kiosks located around the city, and drop it off at another.

The plan calls for an hourly rate paid for by credit card, which would also serve to unlock the bicycles. The key feature would be to have bicycles available within 300 metres, so that taking a bicycle would become as easy or easier than taking a cab.

Similar systems are in place in cities like Montreal, Paris and Berlin.

Bike Train coming to Cobourg this summer!

The Bike Train Initiative is building on its success with the launch of new pilot routes across Ontario for 2009.  It has been announced that Northumberland County will be part of the new Eastern Ontario route with a couple of stops anticipated for Cobourg between June and the first week in October.  Next week scheduling and pricing is anticipated to begin with ticket sales starting around April 22.

This award winning project introduced bike racks on board select VIA Rail departures between Toronto and Niagara Falls in 2007, and more than doubled the number of passengers last year.  The Bike Train seamlessly integrates train travel with cycling by adding bike racks, knowledgeable staff and useful information on board.

The Bike Train team from Toronto (Justin Lafontaine & Peter Lipscombe) have chosen the Waterfront Trail and the Rice Lake Ramble 87 km looped cycling route (incorporates Hamilton and Alnwick/Haldimand Townships as outlined on the County's Outdoor Adventure Map) as their initial pilot project routes.
