Clothes Onlines

Welcome to the Clothesline Committee Page!

We are a group of people bent on bringing back the outdoor clothesline as the first choice for drying our clothes. We hope to do this by promoting outdoor clotheslines as well as encouraging the use of the many ingenious indoor alternatives there are to drying clothes without the use of an electric or gas dryer.Washing on line

With the coming of the automatic clothes dryers we were led to believe that it was somehow “unsightly” to hang our laundry outside. Nonsense we say! All over the world, in the largest cities and the smallest towns and villages, people continue to hang their clothes up and out to dry. Why don’t we? We want to make Cobourg a “World-Class Clothesline Community”, by getting in step with places like Paris, London, Rome, Venice and San Francisco.

Have a look at the photos! We plan to participate in as many local events as we can by hanging up clotheslines (with clothes on them!) wherever we can.

We want to work together with Cobourg Town Council, and the County of Northumberland to convince our citizens that not only do clotheslines reduce our energy consumption, they can also be lots of fun, a creative expression, and a beautiful part of our urban and rural landscapes. (Not to mention the fact that clothes that have been hung on the line to dry smell wonderful!) Remember?

We also plan to encourage the media to show video clips, print photographs and publish articles that foster the culture of clotheslines. We most heartily welcome your participation and input!

Please get in touch with us. We will post the date and location of our next meeting shortly.

International Clothesline Week

International Clothesline Week encourages the public to hang clothes to dry instead of using their electric or gas dryer. If you can, make it a lifetime practice. Like a new years resolution make it the beginning of a new “healthy” habit. If you already do hang your clothes, commit to encouraging at least one other person, IN THE WORLD, to hang their clothes and/or commit to doing something else for the environment.

Every year the first full week in June (Saturday to Saturday) hang your clothes to dry instead of using an electric clothes dryer. 2009's start date is June 6, rain or shine. If a sunny day, hang your clothes outside; if a rainy day, hang your clothes inside. If you can't do it for a week, hang your clothes for a day or even just one load of laundry ... or a pair of jeans…any amount counts and will be appreciated by the people and by the earth itself.

Indoor clotheslines for the winter

Hang laundry year round by rigging a clothesline in your laundry room (if you live in a house) or your bathroom (if you live in an apartment).

Hanging laundry indoors in the winter not only saves you money by avoiding the use of the dryer, it also helps humidify your indoor environment.
